About Me

I started this blog as a way of building an online community of current and past Ivy Tech paralegal students, as well as letting people interested in our program know what we're up to. This blog is not sponsored by Ivy Tech. No way, no how.

My name is Linda Kampe, and I'm the program chair of Paralegal Studies in Lafayette, Indiana. My office is in Ivy Hall 1166. Stop by and chat. For best results, make an appointment, so I know to expect you. And if you bring your own cup, I'll make you tea. Because hey, we're not animals.

Job Hunting outside the Box

Over our fall/Thanksgiving break, I happened to meet a woman who works at a title company. She mentioned that the title company had just hired a paralegal--their first. (I was curious as to whether it was anyone I knew, since she thought the person had graduated from Ivy Tech, but she couldn't remember the name.) I asked whether this was a replacement position, and she said, "No, it's our first paralegal. We wanted someone who was really good with details."

See? I know I drive you all crazy with our crazy fictional client names and my OCD-like focus on grammar, but that's the sort of thing that will broaden your financial horizons.

By the way, welcome back. Let's make these last 3 weeks of class (yes, that's all!) fantastic!!!

Ivy Tech Alternative Spring Break Trip

Spring Break Day Camp Guide 2012 : Sacramento Sidetracks

Ivy Tech is sponsoring a Spring Break trip service project in West Virginia. The deadline to apply to join in is December 2--that's next week Friday!

Here are the details, hot off the press from Kat:

Student Life is offering our first Alternative Spring Break trip! We will be taking 15 students from the Lafayette and Kokomo campuses to Jonesville, WV to serve with Appalachia Service Project (ASP). We will leave campus in the morning on Sunday, March 12 and return in the evening on Saturday, March 18. Transportation, overnight accommodations, and meals Monday-Friday are included. Participants will need to cover the cost of their meals on travel days. We will be traveling to Jonesville, WV. Sleeping accommodations will be dormitory style (6-8 people per room). Participants can expect moderate construction activities (all skill levels needed; we will be matched with a project that is appropriate for our group's skill level). Participants are also expected to assist with duties at the overnight accommodation center (meal prep, meal clean-up, light cleaning, etc). Participants can expect challenging, but rewarding work all week in an area of the country that really needs the assistance.

Applications are due by December 2 at 5 p.m. Students will be notified of acceptance by December 5th. Cost to attend: $50 due December 16. It is a tight turnaround time due to some of the deadlines required by ASP. To apply, complete this application: https://orgsync.com/62409/forms/227475 Any questions? Email Kat Stremiecki in Student Life, kstremiecki@ivytech.edu

Thanks!

Kat

Make-ups (in Linda Kampe's classes ONLY)

With the apparent onset of cold, flu, and litigation season, it is time to remind those of you who have missed quizzes or tests in any of my classes to make arrangements to make those up. It is your responsibility to ensure that the makeup quiz takes place.

There will be some open time in Litigation on Dec. 1, Dec. 6, and Dec. 8 for anyone in any class who wishes to complete a makeup. Please send me an email ahead of time to let me know which date you will be attending, and which quiz(zes) you will be making up.

If none of those times will work for you, please send me an email informing me of that. Again, be sure to include a reference to the quiz(zes) you need to make up. I will place your quiz in the Assessment Center to be completed at your convenience. Any quizzes not completed by 9:00 on December 12, 2016, will be scored as zeroes.

Again, making arrangements to make up work is your responsibility.

Why You Never Say, "Just a Paralegal"

Note the following excerpt from the excellent article, Best of the Business: Paralegals Are Unsung Heroes No More.

Paralegals do not work for us; they work with us and are an integral part of the team. They are patient. They are kind. They do not boast. They are not easily angered. They rarely keep record of wrongs. They always protect, always trust (but verify), always hope and always persevere. Without our professional legal staff, we simply could not provide, with any level of consistency, quality legal services that help make the lives of our clients better – Best of the Business, Paralegals Are Unsung Heroes No More

As always, if you have time, read the whole article.

And another job opportunity!

I just received another call from a local law firm looking for a full-time paralegal. The firm does primarily family law. If you're interested, again, please let me know.

And seriously people, why are you not encouraging all of your friends to enroll in Paralegal Studies?!?!?!

Part-time Job Opportunity

A local bankruptcy attorney is looking for a paralegal to work approximately 20 hours per week, long-term. Please contact me if you have questions.

US Supreme Court News

History was made yesterday at the US Supreme Court, and not because of a court ruling. For the first time ever, the female attorneys (counting arguing attorneys and Supreme Court justices) outnumbered the male attorneys.

You go, girls!

Harvard Law School Is Putting the Nuremberg Trial Records Online

Devils in the details

For HLS team digitizing Nuremberg documents, ‘a haunting effect’

German doctors killed Anna Weiss as part of a Nazi euthanasia program directed at individuals they classified as disabled.
The woman’s so-called disability, as recorded in trial documents: being an “unsympathetic Czech Talmudic Jewess.”
“That ‘unsympathetic’ woman deserved to be named,” said Matt Seccombe, who has been the primary analyst for Harvard Law School Library’s Nuremberg Trials Project. “In these mass atrocities, the names become numbers. They deserve to have their names recorded and remembered.”
In 1949, four years after the Nuremberg war crime trials began, the library received the most complete set of documents from the Nazi prosecutions outside that of the National Archives. Over the years, individuals who participated in the 13 trials have also donated their personal papers related to the cases. In 1998, the library initiated the Nuremberg Trials Project with the goals of preserving the entire collection and making it accessible online. To date, Seccombe has analyzed five trials, including thousands of documents, while scanning teams have digitized the 154,000 transcript pages and nearly 600,000 document pages for all the trials.

We are apparently gaining in popularity in France and the Netherlands. Our following in the Netherlands is undoubtedly due at least in part to Professor Ranchor's influence. And in France? I'm still waiting to hear from my son (teaching English in Blois) that he has heard from one of you!

Vote!

With early voting underway, this is a good time to remind you that besides making you a fine, upstanding citizen, voting is yet another way to earn engagement points. Get a picture of yourself with your "I voted" sticker, or one of those dreaded polling-booth selfies, or whatever. It's 10 points. But that's not why you do it, right?

Bon Voyage Party

The Paralegal Society will be hosting a Bon Voyage party for Professor Ranchor on Thursday, October 27, at 1:30 - 2:45 in Griffin Hall 131. All paralegal and legal studies students (and alums) are welcome to join us. Questions? Contact me or any Paralegal Society officer.

Talk to a Lawyer!

Remember, tomorrow is Talk to a Lawyer Day at Ivy Tech. Local attorneys will be providing free 15-minute consultations to members of the public. No appointment needed.

Paralegal students are encouraged to help with check-in whenever you have some free time. Stop by the Lilly Rooms in Ivy Hall!

International stuff!!!

First, I'd like you to note the addition to our favorite blogs list. Estrelita, our visiting professor from the Netherlands, is keeping a blog about her travels here. (She shares the blog with her colleagues who are visiting various other places in the US.) For some reason, I can't get an automatic feed on that one, so you may have to play with it a little if you click on the link. Also, do not try to adjust your screen--it is in Dutch.

Second, I will be taking Estrelita on a tour of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse on Friday. I look forward to being able to introduce her to our many students and alumni who work there. And I also invite anyone who would like to join us to look for us. We will be wandering, but we hope to stop by a criminal sentencing in Superior 1 at 11:00, and protective order hearings at 1:00 (Superior 5?).

Finally, we have had loads of international visitors in the past week--including some from the Netherlands (Estrelita's students?) and France (seriously, if you're in Blois, look for a tall, redheaded American English teacher at the local high school). And to all, bienvenido!
