Just a reminder that the Legal Society will be meeting Thursday, December 7, at 5 p.m. The meeting will take place in Ivy 1132. We will be electing officers for next semester. Please be aware that you need not be present to "win," so you'll want to attend for sure.

October is National Free Pizza Month

Okay, maybe October is not National Free Pizza Month, but you would think so around here. There are a lot of things coming up in a hurry, and many of them involve free pizza. Dinner (or lunch) is on us. 

• Thursday, September 28 at 11:15: Money Myths. Kick off Free Pizza Month Eve with a lunch and learn (and free pizza) in the Lilly Rooms. RSVP to the Student Life Office if possible so they can get an accurate headcount.
• Friday, September 29 at 11:00 - 1:00: Human Trafficking. Lunch (which may or may not involve pizza) and learn about human trafficking. This presentation takes place off-campus in Crawfordsville, so it's a good time for all of you who bemoan the fact that everything happens in Tippecanoe to jump in. The presentation takes place at St. John's Episcopal Church in Crawfordsville. RSVP here.
• Sunday, October 1 at 1:00: Purdue Women's Soccer. The Litigation class (LEGS 202) is working on a case involving a tragic soccer injury and has elected to attend this Purdue Women's Soccer game as research. You are all welcome to join us. No pizza, but plenty of engagement points. 
• Tuesday, October 3 at 5:00: Legal Society Meeting. Oh, the drama! The pageantry! Actually, it's 6 - 12 people hanging out in a room planning upcoming events. A low stress, pizza-free way to get to know your colleagues outside of the classroom and have a voice in planning upcoming events. In the conference room.
• Tuesday, October 10 at 11:00 and 12:30: NAMI--In Our Own Voices. Munch on free pizza and listen to community members describe the challenges of living with chronic mental illness. Lilly Rooms.
• Thursday, October 12 from 3 - 5: Storytelling by the ASAP Students. I know almost nothing about this, but it's sure to be interesting. Who doesn't love a good story? The Lilly Rooms.
• Thursday, October 12 at 6:00: Dinner with the PARA/LEGS Alums. This may or may not involve pizza, but it will involve dinner. Come be regaled by our recent, and not-so-recent, alums as they share the wisdom they have acquired out in the working world. Please RSVP to me or Hannah Isenberg so we can get an accurate headcount. The Lilly Rooms, I think.

Whew! No one should be starving in October. Or complaining about engagement points! (Yes, I know I have been slow on those. My apologies. I hope to be caught up SOON.)

Calling All Alums!

It's that time again: All PARA/LEGS alumni are invited to join the Legal Society (formerly the Paralegal Society) for Pizza with the Alums on Thursday, October 12, at 6:00. Tell current students what you wish you had known when you were in their shoes! Share your war stories!

Announcements

1.  Today is the last meeting of the Legal Society for the semester. Officers will be elected, power will be handed off--Oh, the pageantry! Don't miss it! The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. in Ivy 1183.
2. Check your emails. You should have links to your course evaluations. PLEASE fill those out. We faculty members appreciate feedback just as much as you do. Maybe more. Please let us know what we're doing right and where we could improve.
3. Register for summer and fall classes!!!!!

Thoughts for the beginning of the week

Yeah, this is just going to be a random collection of stuff. But I've learned that if I break it down into separate articles, you might need to scroll, and you just don't do that.

1. Legal Society meeting tomorrow in Ivy 1132. I believe we are electing officers. Warning: you need not be present to win. 
2. There's a humorous violinist performing on campus Wednesday at 4:30. Bring the kids, get some engagement points, have a good laugh. 
3. Last week, a liberal arts faculty member paid me (and you!) the nicest compliment: "When I receive an extremely well-written paper, I assume the student who wrote it is one of yours." 😄 All that red ink is paying off. Thanks for making us all look good!
4. Thursday, April 6--3 days from now--Purdue Graduate Student Government is hosting Jonathan Rauch to talk about Minorities and Free Speech. The talk is free and open to the public. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Pharmacy Building, Room 172. Rauch is the author of six books, including Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought. 

Pizza with the Alums This Thursday!

Calling all alumni!!!!

Next Thursday, March 23, is Pizza with the Alumni, sponsored by the Legal Society (formerly the Paralegal Society). Please join us at 6 p.m. in Ivy 1120 for pizza and a chance to impart your wisdom to the up-and-coming paralegals.

No promises, but if you rave about the importance of good writing skills, I'll try to sneak you some extra dessert.

Appeals on Wheels

Appeals on Wheels is one week from today! Woot!

Please plan to attend the oral argument at 1 p.m. in the Ivy Hall Auditorium. You are also invited to attend lunch with the judges ahead of time, but YOU MUST RSVP by Monday. Send me an email to RSVP.

We'll have a "Case at a Glance" pamphlet to hand out the day of the event, but if you'd like to get the nitty gritty version of things, feel free to read the briefs themselves. (For something in between, remember that I did post a 1-paragraph synopsis of the case a few weeks ago. Yes, you might need to scroll.) The link for the briefs is below:

Legal Society News

Yes, you read that right: Legal Society. The Paralegal Society voted Tuesday night to change its name to the more inclusive moniker Legal Society.

Other actions taken:

Pizza with the Alums is scheduled for Thursday, March 23, at 6:00 p.m. Students, prospective students, and alumni are all encouraged to attend, and not just for the food. What better way to get a sense of what life is really like in a law office than to hear it from someone who recently started working in one? (Or who has worked in one for a while--we'd love to hear the voice of experience as well.) No charge. Come talk to someone who's been there. Oh--and get the word out to any alumni you know!

 

Appeals on Wheels is set for March 2. PARA/LEGS students are encouraged to act as hosts/hostesses for the appellate judges, staff, and attorneys. Please report to the hallway outside Ivy 1120 by 11:15 ish. Professional dress required. I, and I alone, am the sole judge of what is professional dress. There is no appeal.

Heads up here--NO flip-flops or athletic shoes; nothing with holes; do not sport cleavage (for or aft); no jeans or shorts; clothing with words on it of any sort will be highly suspect; no clothing that has not been recently laundered; etc. For purposes of Appeals on Wheels, leggings are deemed NOT to be pants.
