HireIvy/Career Development Events next Tuesday and Wednesday!!!

Next week is our very first HireIvy Days event! 

On the 27^th and 28^th, Career Development will be in the Grand Hall with our partners from WorkHere and Interview Stream to raise awareness of the services we offer. There will be a prize drawing and to enter, students will just need to create a HireIvy account! 

On Tuesday the 27th, Purdue Human Resources will be on campus giving a presentation on career readiness. This will be a great opportunity for students to learn about this process. 

On Wednesday the 28th, there will be an opportunity for students to get free professional headshots for their portfolio or resume.

All events will take place in the Grand Hall between 1:00 - 4:00 pm (headshots are 1:00-3:00), with the exception of the Purdue presentation, which will be in the auditorium.  

44 Plays for 44 Presidents

The Lafayette Civic Theatre is currently showing the timely play, "44 Plays for 44 Presidents." The play consists of a series of vignettes, one for each of our elected presidents. It ends with a "choose your own play" option where the audience can vote on which current candidate's vignette the performers should close with. The show is at times funny, sad, and confusing (I'm still puzzled about the James Garfield vignette), but always educational and thought-provoking. Purdue Fall Preview Day - Transfer UP!

Friday, October 14, 2016 at 08:30 AM until 04:00 PM

North Stadium Parking Lot 1006 Cherry Ln W Lafayette, IN 47906 At these on-campus programs, transfer students can attend an information fair, meet with representatives from Purdue's colleges and schools, tour the campus and residence halls, and enjoy a complimentary lunch in a student dining court.

Transportation is available from Ivy Tech to the 1st 15 students that sign up in the Academic Advising Office, Rm 2117. All others will need to provide their own transportation.

Self-Defense Class for Women in West Lafayette

The West Lafayette Police Department is sponsoring a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class for women. Details are below.

WHEN: Mon, Oct 3, 5:15 PM - 8:15 PM
WHERE: Cook Building at 1 Geddes Way, West Lafayette, IN

The class will be held October 3, 4, 10 and 11 from 5:15pm to 8:15pm. To complete the class you are required to attend all four classes. The cost is $10.00. Applications can be picked up at West Lafayette Police Records .This course has its foundations in education and awareness. The course includes lecture, discussion and self-defense techniques suitable for women of all ages and abilities.

Register to Vote!

In our never-ending quest to leave you with no excuses, Ivy Tech has partnered with something called TurboVote. I know nothing about it, but according to the information I received, it is supposed to streamline the procedure for registering (which is not particularly onerous anyway) and requesting an absentee ballot. It's worth checking out if you STILL have not registered.

The information I received is below.

Get ready to vote! Ivy Tech Office of Student Life has partnered with TurboVote to ensure that students have everything that they need to vote in the upcoming general election. TurboVote has agreed to make this service available to Ivy Tech faculty and staff as well!

To sign-up for TurboVote, visit ivytech.turbovote.org and click on “Get Started”. Once you’ve signed up, you can:

· Register to vote

· Request an absentee ballot

· Update your voter registration information

· Sign-up to receive reminders about your voting location and upcoming local, state and federal elections

Sign up today. The general election is November 8^th, and in order to vote, you’ll need to be registered by October 11^th.

Transferring to a 4-Year College Next Year?

I received this announcement this morning:

The Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is now available. The JKC scholarship is the largest private scholarship in the country and awards up to $40,000 per year to high achieving community college students pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Awards are based on financial need and cover tuition and any other expenses incurred during the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. High potential students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution in fall 2017 should apply. The application is lengthy and requires letters of recommendation so please start the application soon. Applications must be turned in by noon (ET) on October 25, 2016.
