The Paralegal Studies program has an advisory committee composed of local judges, attorneys, and paralegals. They meet twice a year, and we exchange advice and requests--the most famous of those, of course, being "Please teach your students to write." We all know how I ran with that.
Anyway, last night our advisory committee asked me to strongly encourage my students to seek out more opportunities to see lawyers and the law in action. Challenge accepted. You know those engagement points students in my classes are chasing? They aren't going away.
At the request of my advisory committee, I would like to invite and encourage you to seek out public meetings--city council, county council, zoning boards, and the like. Meeting times are usually posted on each county's website. If they aren't, call the county clerk and ask. Lawyers do a lot more than hang out in courtrooms, after all.
For Tippecanoe, the Area Planning Committee meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the County Building. The Board of Zoning Appeals meets on the 1st Wednesday in December at 7:00 p.m. City and County Council meetings are somewhat more frequent. Check Tippecanoe's website (or your own county's or city's website) for other meetings.
And before you even ask, yes, of course: 10 - 20 points.
A blog largely about the Ivy Tech Paralegal program, but not sponsored by Ivy Tech. Because, you know, they have rules.
About Me
I started this blog as a way of building an online community of current and past Ivy Tech paralegal students, as well as letting people interested in our program know what we're up to. This blog is not sponsored by Ivy Tech. No way, no how.
My name is Linda Kampe, and I'm the program chair of Paralegal Studies in Lafayette, Indiana. My office is in Ivy Hall 1166. Stop by and chat. For best results, make an appointment, so I know to expect you. And if you bring your own cup, I'll make you tea. Because hey, we're not animals.

Practicum Update
We need a few more people to sign up for this spring's practicum. I like to give preference to people who will be in their final spring semester, but I would also like to encourage students who already have jobs at law offices or courthouses to consider signing up for it. Why not get college credit for something you're already doing?

Attention Beer and Tuna Lovers!
Under a couple of recently approved class-action settlements, purchasers of Beck's Beer and Starkist Tuna may be entitled to some money.
Beck's Beer was sued for misleading labels that suggested the beer was imported, when in fact it was not. Anyone who bought Beck's Beer between May 1, 2011, and June 23, 2015, is eligible for a refund. If you have your receipt, you can get a refund of up to $50. If you don't have your receipt--because honestly, who hangs onto a receipt for beer for 4+ years?--you are eligible for a refund of $12. The deadline to apply for your refund is November 20, 2015. To apply, log on to this website.
Starkist Tuna was sued for selling cans of tuna that did not meet the weight stated on the label. Anyone who bought one or more cans of Starkist Tuna between 2009 and 2014 is eligible for a refund of up to $50. And who hasn't bought tuna in the last 6 years? No receipt required for this one, because the Starkist people are apparently more realistic about whether people treasure their grocery receipts. The deadline for this one is also November 20, 2015. To apply for your refund, log on here.
It might not pay next semester's tuition, but it'll keep you in beer and tuna for a while.
You're welcome.

Paralegal Society Meeting Announcement
Paralegal Society Members,
My name
is Ashley Coons and I am your Vice President of the Paralegal Society. I hope
everyone made it through midterms without a hitch! This email is intended to
update you on upcoming events. We will be having a society meeting on Wednesday,
October 28, 2015 at 5:30 in the afternoon in Ivy Hall 1132. The
meeting should last about a half hour or so. The officers and senior members
are really looking forward to meeting all the new society members! Our topics
of discussion will include Talk to a Lawyer Day information, scheduling
of further meetings and upcoming events and plans for next semester. Also, your
President and I have an announcement for all that are in attendance. If you
have paid your dues and have yet to provide a receipt to me or Aaron, please
bring that to the meeting. Also, if you have any questions or topic items you’d
like to see addressed within the paralegal program, please email me or Aaron
privately to discuss these matters. And don't forget, please pass along the
word of Paralegal Society- the more members the better!
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!
And Now, a Word from the Paralegal Society
TALK TO A LAWYER DAY
In honor of National Pro Bono week, local attorneys will be
available to answer general questions regarding civil legal matters. This event
will take place on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in
Ivy Hall, rooms 1112 and 1114. We are in need of volunteers to help host this
event. There will be a short training seminar in Griffin Hall, room 140 on
Thursday, October 22, 2015 starting promptly at 10:15 and will last about 15-20
minutes. We encourage anyone wanting to volunteer at Talk to a Lawyer Day to
attending this short seminar but lack of attendance does NOT mean you can’t
participate in Talk to a Lawyer Day! For more information, please contact Linda
Kampe or your paralegal society officers, whose email addresses will be listed
below. Thanks in advance for your help!

The local pro bono commission is hosting an afternoon continuing legal education program on Wednesday, October 28--and the commission director has specifically invited ALL of Lafayette Ivy Tech's paralegal students. The CLE program starts at 1, and the reception (free shrimp!) starts at 5. You are invited to attend either or both, but you must register. And for my students, yes, either event would be worth 10-20 points.
